The double-decker trains of the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner run 89 miles an hour along the scenic Southern California coast from San Diego to San Luis Obispo. In between these two end-to-end terminals are cool places you can take day trips at via the Pacific Surfliner. Train trips are the best way to tour California because it lets you experience a relaxing ride without having to worry about road traffic. Bizarre Hotel Story of the Week: Fecal Matter?

We’ve heard a lot of odd and downright disturbing stories of hotel happenings over the years, but the newest tale circulating around the web is one of the spookiest (and saddest unfortunately). In fact, it’s the type of story you’d expect to see on Dateline NBC (and, depending on the outcome, it could eventually become an episode). So, no, we weren’t joking about the “fecal matter” bit, but before we dive into that, we’ll  give you the backstory.

A young, 21-year-old Canadian girl went missing at the end of last month during her stay at Cecil Hotel in downtown Los Angeles, a city on the borderline of Skid Row. While she was on her way to Santa Cruz, there’s not much explanation as to why she chose a questionable hotel in such a shady area, especially since she was by herself. She also had been in touch with her family, so it seems they would not have been comfortable with it either, but perhaps they were not at all familiar with the area and its reputation.

Traveling to Los Angeles

A huge sprawling metropolis in sunny southern California on the west coast of the United States, the idea of Los Angeles conjures up many different images for different people.  For some, it’s Hollywood and movie stars, for others the beach and long coastline and others think of traffic jams, violence and generic sprawl.  The beauty of Los Angeles is that there is a little something for everyone.The first Travel Monday article of the New Year will be featuring a city close to my heart, my birthplace and native land of Los Angeles, USA.

The second-most visited spot in all of California behind Disneyland, Venice Beach is a spot to visit for people watching, beach days or shopping for kitschy souvenirs.  Stop by Muscle Beach to see where actor-turned Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger got his start pumping iron.  Visit the myriad street performers offering a variety of different shows of skill and talent.  Or, just soak in the ambiance of this beach that has been made famous as a backdrop in hundreds of different movies and television shows.  It’s the ultimate LA spot- a little bit weird, a little bit wild, but all parts unique and fun.
